Mondays are my first brass band rehearsal evening of the week. I love my band. It’s certainly not fashionable or especially popular, but there’s just something fantastic about making music with 24 other friends.

I’ve been doing this for over forty years now. I can hardly believe it myself, but playing an instrument is such a great hobby for me.

I have played a brass instrument for as long as I can remember. I started when I was six and I’m still going at it, more than forty years later.

I’m enjoying at much now as I ever have. I’m not exactly Wynton Marsalis, but I can blow well enough to play in a good brass band. My pursed lips have been pressed against this mouthpiece too many times to count. There are, no doubt, large quantities of my DNA embedded in those tiny pits on the rim.

Never borrow another brass player’s mouthpiece.

This time we are rehearsing Land of the Long White Cloud by Philip Sparke. This is the chosen test piece for the Area, and we are running it out at the imminent NEMBBA contest too. It’s a cracking piece of music, if a bit heavy on the lip.
