Stupid Sound Card!

Bah! I installed Mandrake 10.0 last night. I decided that I’d be better off going for a clean install, seeing as I didn’t have anything I really needed to keep on the previous 9.2 version, and it didn’t go quite as well as planned. For some reason the soundcard driver doesn’t want to work properly (or even at all) and just fails to start, leaving me with a cryptic failure message, plus I installed xine (my preferred media player) and every time it starts up it crashes KDE and it has to restart. I get the same effect with Totem. I can only assume it’s related to the soundcard issue, but I don’t really know seeing as I’m unfamiliar with the required logs.

Anyway, tonight I shall be reinstalling again, this time I’ll be turning off the “Plug and Play” option in the BIOS. I’d Googled about a bit last night and found a forum somewhere that mentioned that this option can cock-up certain hardware if it’s enabled. I’d turned it on when I was trying to get my new hard drive sorted (still not fixed that btw).

I’ve also got the name for the right driver to use for the soundcard (not the one that’s been chosen as the default. I’ll be sure to blog the results – don’t be getting too excited now ;o)
