Do you remember those adverts for Esso that explained that they always performed a “Price Watch” on local petrol stations so that you could be confident that their prices were the cheapest around? They had a poster with tiger’s eyes on.
I’m not sure when they stopped doing that, but they have. My local Esso is set on one of the main thoroughfares in Beeston and charges 83.9p a litre today. That’s 4p a litre more than the Sainsbury’s that’s 200 yards away, but as that filling station is set back from the main street you can’t see it.
Props to Sainsbury’s for sticking to their cheaper prices – it would have been very easy for them to price match the Esso. Balls to Esso – they don’t even have an air machine!
