26/365 Work

I work with computers. I’ve loved my computers since my parents bought me a ZX81 back in ancient history, and I’ve always had them around since. I had lots of fun with my ZX Spectrum, and my first post in the RAF was mostly an IT post (working with some PCs – 386s – along with a camp full of dumb terminals connected to Honeywell Bull DPS6).

Once I’d got my teeth into PCs I developed a love of Linux. I tried all kinds of distributions (Gentoo, Slackware, Debian etc) before finding the easy life with Ubuntu.

Later on I discovered that this Linux lark was all too difficult and a friend of ours showed me his iMac. This led me to buy my own, and I’ve been a Mac user ever since – at home at least. This has been going on for ten years now, and my iMac is still going, though with a new hybrid drive.

Throughout all this Windows has been ever-present at work. We did have a Dell Windows laptop at home, but it was pretty dull compared to the iMac. I’ve always seen Windows as the boring office OS, but the more I use it the more I appreciate it. I have Windows 7 on this little Lenova work laptop, but it works really well and the machine is faster than it looks.

I’m looking forward to Windows 10 (really!). I think Microsoft are steadily improving their OSs, while Apple seem to be dropping the ball a bit.
